91 terrano diff strength

Post by mattm »

Just trying to find how a terrano diff copes under high torque and horsepower running a mild drag car and have terrano diff ready to be modified to fit. A hilux conversion has been done a fair bit and has been proven to work are there any weaknesses in the terrano dif hg46 before i start spending alot of money. should be around 500nm of torque and 600hp at the wheels in a 800kg car trying to break the 9 second bracket

sorry is off topic to what your used to any infomation will be appricieted

Thanks Matt

Slightly bigger than a toyota 8" and the diff head is the same as a GO patrol front, so should be as strong as a Toyota one. Prob not the same range of ratios off the shelf though.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

The Terrano rear diff is an H233b so 233mm crown wheel and a lot stronger than a Hilux diff. But it runs 31 spline axles. If you get a Safari rear diff then it has the same crown wheel but 33 spline axles and a lot stronger.
I have been running a Safari rear axles in my truck with 280 rwkw (turboed VH45) and 35" tyres and haven't had a problem even with low range work so that will cope easily with the 500nm and 600hp you are talking about.
As an idea, there are a ton of guys with 800+nm torque (turbo deisel) and the diff handles that and that is with up to 3000kgs on top of them as well. 800kg is a nothing.
Upon saying all that my front diff is an h233b with 31 spline axles and that gets the same treatment as the rear so sould cope with what you need as well.

good to here

so am i right in assuming that a safari diff head bolts into the terrano housing?

as for the ratio i gave a 4.6 which seems so be good for what im using the car for would there be a lower ratio to choose from i no theres a 4.6 and i think a 4.8

Some of the Nissan vans run the same diff and have a 5.2 or something like that. Nissan transaxle numbers will tell you (as it appears you know).
Why would you want to fit a Safari head into a Terrano diff? I assume width? The problem is the axles not the head, so if you need 33 spline axles for strength then you need a complete Safari axle.
A Terrano rear diff head will bolt into a Safari front diff which some do to get a cheap front LSD. But thy are both 31 spline
If you are really worried then get an H260 diff from some GQ's and a lot of GU's. try 260mm ring and 35 spline axles!
