vr v6 surf(problems)
vr v6 surf(problems)
ok my vr v6 surf is making popping noises wen idling and at higher(3000rpm'ish) makes a kind of pinging noise. its quite loud and sounds like a big exhaust leak, iv checked and havn't found one, it also happens wen under load at lower rpm, it was doing the same thing on the old vn engine that was in it about 3 weeks ago.
the oil pressure gauge reads prity low. its got oil and the oil pressures been the same since iv owned the truck, i did a oil/filter change wen i put the new engine in.
any advice or info would be great thanks.

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
probably a stupid question but are all the leads on the right way sounds to me like a couple could be backwards

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
He means correct firing order. It does sound like it could be a misfire. Did you use the same coil packs on both engines?
The only other thing that could be common to both engines is the fuel system but I have no idea how it would cause your symptoms.
Start the car and pull the plug leads seeing if you get a missfire, if you pull a lead and nothing happens check the lead, coil, plug and then the injector if they all check out.

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
i pulled all the injector plugs off and there all sweet. starts missing every time i pull a plug off.
I'm prity sure all leads are on right, and the spark plugs are relatively new.
thanx

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
put a fuel pressure reg on it and get the injectors serviced.
excess fuel goin in, fuel in zaust popping is that fuel burning, quite a common thing with commys when big zausts are put on and lack of mufflers, not noticable when going thru standard zausts.
just a guess tho

thanks wopass,
i read somewhere the the ngk spark plugs for these are sh!t, so im going to go buy some new ones..

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
Nothing wrong with NGKs. Do you run oxygen sensors? Could be faulty. Need to do fuel presure and flow test. What parts have you retained from previous engine? If itwas doing the exact same as is now look at what components you have reused. Make very sure there is no air leaks down stream of MAF sensor, vacum hoses, even valley. On a side note check tightness of valley nuts, they become loose and suck in water down the back of head into the rear cylinder inlet port, left hand bank seams to suffer the most. Hope some of that helps.

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
cheers landy. it also seems to puff a light mist out the exhaust. i fought it was just over fueling.. the onlythings i used from the previouse engine are E'manifolds sump, coils, powersteer, pump, alti, etc etc.
how do i do fuel pressure and flow tests??
and i haven't been on the site in donkeys years, and just moved out of home, and have a fulltime job and one day off a week. so finding it very hard to find time to do things.
will upload pictures wen i can find the camera.
cheers

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
If you have reused the coils that would be the first thing i'd check. I always carry at least one as a spare cause i've heard they can be a bit iffy

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
Yes definitely check coils, might want to take then into a garage or auto sparky to do, also need a proper fuel presure tester that gets put in the line from pump, also checks presure reg as well, again may need to see a garage with the correct gar to do it.

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
Thicker oil or engine rebuild
Low oil presure normally means larger bearing clearances or just getting worn out

or the gauge/sender unit is shot. get a new mechanical oil pressure gauge set up from ripco and get that on then see what you pressure is.
and yea get your coils checked

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
oh wonder full. more money to spend on the bloody pos. ohwell i geuss you have to spend money . .
ill go with the mechanical oil pressure set.
the ticking noise is now ticking on idle... i tried to take a video on my phone and a voise recorder but did not work.. all you can hear is the engine .

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
Take the cover off and down each side of the inlet valley is the bolts or nuts that screw it onto the cylinder head

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
Sounds like a head gasket, water can also cause a missfire. If you are going to pull the sump to check the oil pickup check the main bearings these could be part of the oil pressure issue.
You should be able to find someone with a mechanical oil pressure gauge, all you need to do is prove the accuracy of the current sender
Oil is very important in these engines especially on angles

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
lol cheers guys. will price up the head gasket set.
herd they are cheap as chips. and ill make it a weekend project for myself. .
i cant take the sump off, i need to take the engine out to do that
thanks again

Re: vr v6 surf(problems)
water comming out the zaust could be just condensation, if its not loosing any from the radiator over a period of time then theres no worries there.
