Always carry your extinguisher!

Post by toominator »

So today I was coming back from Naseby to Dunedin after a weekend away biking. Because my bike rack doesn't fit past the spare wheel and I haven't had it modified, I had the spare in the boot, which ment I had to take out the couple of bits I usually have in there - a 5kg fire extinguisher and shovel (I kept my tow rope in there though :x). I wasn't planning on doing any offroading so I thought I'd be fine without carrying any equipment.

Coming up the hill on the Dunedin side of Waitati I saw smoke, come around the corner and there is a small fire on the side of the road. Must of just started. Small enough at that point that a fire extinguisher could have made a difference. I was kicking myself at that point as I didn't have anything useful, but then remembered the rubber floor mats! It's hot and dirty work beating the edges of a fire with mats. It made sweet #### all difference anyway as there was a decent wind fanning it straight up the hill. Felt better to be knocking out the edges on the downwind side than standing doing nothing though. It was amazing how fast it spread. Luckily the fire service got there within about 20 min and had it under control pretty quickly.

So annoyed for not having that extinguisher with me! I don't think I'll leave it out again.

Anyone in Dunedin who can weld? I might get an extension for that bike rack now!
