Newbie from Wellington. (Looking to buy)

Post by allblack316 »

Hey Guys,
Names James. Am living in Wellington and looking for a decent forum where i can gather info from fellow enthusiasts about my two choices for my next work vehicle. Neither are what I would call a 4wding vehicle but this is the best looking place i can find for help. Am looking at either a 1993+ Surf (3L diesel turbo), or maybe a 1994+ Terrano.

Would rather the Surf but i dont really know much at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Main use will be driving to town daily, but occasionally offroad (nothing extreme though)

Cheers
James

Terrano's...check for rust under the rear seatbelt mounts, V6 Petrols (both surf and terrano) thirsty, 1KZte's (and 2lte's) will crack heads at higher k's.

could look at a Prado as well, theres swb one on here cheap http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 054329.htm

or a Pajero as well?

As Jerry said, The V6s are thirsty, 80% of 2lte's and 1kzte's have a head cracking problem, and some dont.

If you can stretch out and get a 96+ 185 series surf with the Intercooled 1kzte you cant go wrong, they have a bigger Rad and with the intercooler they run a lot cooler and dont do the heads as easy.

Hey Guys,
thanks for the great response. Its all looking pretty one sided at the moment isnt it? haha

Well like i said i was preferring a Surf than a Terrano. Only reason i even know Terrano is because 3 other work mates have them. What if service history for either vehicle is provided? Id much rather buy a Surf with service history than a Terrano with none and vice-versa.

In terms of fuel economy (or lack there of), what kind of figures are people getting? One work mate says he pays 50-60 to fill his terrano and it drives him places all week. Is the 3L surf really that bad? I will be making a trip from Porirua to Welly and back most days.

Cheers

Hi James , welcome

My preference the Terrano :D :D :D but then I'm biased
A surprising wee truck on and off the track and often underated   :D :D

Have you considered a Safari ?
There are a few used around here for workhorses.
Not what if, but why not
