1kzte knocking sound from cyl 2.

ive got a knocking sound from cylinder 2 .. sounds like something tapping , and will tap faster as rpm increases.. i think the engine has been run low on oil due to leaking turbo .

mechanic friend thinks its in the bottom end, so basically means a rebuild or 2nd hand engine.

what sort of money would i be looking at to rebuild one of these or am i best going 2nd hand engine... anyone you could recommend to do a homejob rebuild, not so keen on paying a workshop at full rate

Don't know about cost, but given a rebuilt engine is a known entity and a second hand one isnt, I'd go for the rebuild.

Then you can fiddle while you are in there. Porting the head, matching manifolds, clean the manifolds, get rid of EGR (and associated gunge), redo oil pump, replace water pump, cam belt, thermostat, hoses, etc...

I know it will cost but at least you know where you are when you turn the key for the first time.

Pull the glow plugs and check them.
They are known for breaking off and damaging head and piston etc.

Toyota do a good deals on brand new short blocks and heads (if you need to go that far)

ok verdict is its the piston, will whip the engine out n go from there..

i hope they checked that its not a faulty injector.

engine was run low on oil, cant see how a injector can be making quite a semiloud tapping noise?

i've heard that sometimes they can fail and pour fuel in rather than spray it causing a big ignition lag and massive diesel knock.

incidentally was at mechanics some months ago and they had one running that sounded like rods where about to fly through the side. apparently injection pump fault.

on my old diesel 4.2 patrol when under load it sounded like the big ends were about to let go,turned out to be injectors
FJ40,INJECTED SB 406 CHEV, LOCKER,35 SIMEXS,warn winch , 80seies vx 4.2 24v turbo diesel ,fr and rear lockers 3" exh top mount intercooler, 021 724482

oh ok. did it make tapping noise on idle? did it blow any extra smoke cann u remember?

If its an Injector fault itll be pouring fuel in rather than spraying as stated above,(think garden hose with or without the nozzle on the end) it will prob be there throughout the rev range as you said yours is. An there will prob be alot of black smoke as all the fuel isnt bein burnt.

How many ks has your engine done?

Easiest way to check condition of the injectors is to whip them out an take them to a specialist diesel shop like diesel an turbo.
They will be able to quickly an cheaply tell you if they are faulty. (not so cheap if you have to replace them, but still cheaper than rebuilding an engine then findin it makes the same noise :wink: )

There are of course a number of other things that could cause the knock, ie. glow plugs as stated above,
broken piston rings(damn things always find there way onto the top of the piston an knock like hell)
Broken valve(this will prob give you a bad miss fire also)
As you said it was run low on oil it could of course be a big end bearing... wont know till ya start pullin it to bits but if youve already pulled it out get the injectors checked out 1st.
