80 Series fridge/cooler-how do they work?

As title suggests, after info on how the factory coolers in 80series cruisers work.

Are they a stand alone unit or plumbed into the aircon system of the vehicle? Looking at buying a 2nd hand unit, but need to find out whats involved in getting it running.
