Driving while winching problem.

Post by mudnutz »

Winch is working fine when in neutral then when i engage L4 to drive forward the winch wont work. Ive just replaced the gearbox and transfer box but am using my original PTO. I could drive and winch with my old gearbox so this could be a clue to the problem. Has anyone had a similar problem? Truck is a 70 series landcruiser.

I have spoken to my crusier expert and he has advised me ... the 70s came out with to different Power Take Off drives..
they came in a single cog set up and a twin cog set up ..and the twin cog set up came out with one small cog and one big cog... , he also advised that the big cog was for neutrel winching and the small was for driveing and winching
he is asking are you useing a Twin cog PTO ,or a single Cog PTO...????
as some transfer cases will run a twin cog set up , and others will only run the one cog set up...

As it used to drive and winch before i replaced the gearbox i would assume it was a twin cog pto. Maybe i need to put my old transfer box back on. That would explain it. Cheers Bolo.

hmmm that dosent make sence coz the pto drive gear is splined and fixed on the input shaft into the transfer case so as long as the gearbox is driving the transfer case the pto drive gear will be turning regardless of whether the transfer case in H, L or neutral?

There are two different PTO's for the split transfer cases (single direction or forward/reverse) but to my knowledge theres only one type of pto drive gear in the transfercase?

yep what he said

tend to think that the winch is still opperating but when in first it is turning way slower then what your wheel speed is giving the impression that nothing is happening.

im using 3rd or 4th when winching on easier stuff just to get the line speed up a bit and moving down to 2nd when its getting harder 1st gear for the winch line speed is very slow so i have not used the drive and winch method (as of yet)
