Tyres for vitaras

hi guys just wondering what size tyres you can fit on to standard vitara rims?

Pretty big, 30/9.5/15s fit on no sweat, you could definately get 31s on or maybe bigger, they'll just look very balloonish. the determining factors are more tyre clearance and grunt to push them along. 30's with a 2 inch lift on a 16v escudo is a good all round solution.

is it nessasary to get a lift done to fit 30" on? my mates got a vitara and wants to put muds on it.

I had to do a minimum of one inch lift to get 30s on. To fit 31s took two inches in the body and two inches in the suspension, along with some guard cutting and sheetmetal (footwell) pounding.

One inch is quite cheap and simple, whether you go with suspension or body-lift.

one inch body and the cheap vitara lift works all good aye and is real easy. fits 31's with a bit of firewall massaging but I'd prob go 30's.
Running mudstars too, mint tyre.

I got a 3dr with 2" suspension lift and 30" tyres and had to fold guard lips so JUST misses but does rub wells a bit at full flex (OME shocks and Toughdog spring VERY good combo).

Also had 4dr with OME springs (45mm lift) and 30" rubbed a bit. 235/75 R15's were exactly right - just missed everything and only (I think) about .4" smaller.

Hi Guys,

Have just bought a 96 Vitara 5 door 1.6. Intended use mainly as a hunting truck. So will be on sealed roads from town to the hills (approx 50 km from home) but want to be reasonably capable with light duty off road.

Will also be doing a bit of driving around farm land, grass/mud to get to hunting spots or spotlighting rabbits etc.

Need to replace the road tyres. Am i best to go with an All terrain tyre or would something like a maxxis mudder be the go.

From the little research i have done already it seems that 235/75 R15 on a 15x7" zero offset rim is about the biggest i can go without a lift or other mods for clerance.

The vitara isnt my only vehicle.

Can anyone confirm that the 235/75 R15's will definitely fit with no fouling issues on a standard ride height Vitara?

Hi GWH,

I put some 30x9.5x15 tyres on mine (only slightly bigger in diameter than 235/75/15) and they did rub a little bit on the inside of the guard when fully flexing the suspension. A 1" suspension or body lift should take care of it. Suspension lift is better all-round, but slightly more expensive than body lift and requires wheel alignment with camber correcting bolts for the front. Body lift is cheap and easy.

235/75/15 is approx 29" diameter, so only about 0.5" per side smaller than the 30s, you will probably be fine for normal driving and farm roads, if you start doing anything serious you will probably find you can still get the rear to touch the top of the guard! Once you fit those nice big tyres you will probably want to lift it a bit anyway to improve the look. I've got the 30s on mine with a 1 inch suspension lift and it has totally transformed the look, not a hairdresser's car anymore!

The other thing to consider is what rims you want to get, the stock rims on mine were +24 offset and I got myself a pair of 15x7 with -19 offset, so my track with is substantially wider, meaning it should be way more stable off-road.

I ran a set of 31" on the escudo, it required a 2" body lift with the cheap 2"susp lift, I had no problems with rubbing on guards at all. though I had no rear guards

Dont forget that body lifts require certs. I have 225/75 R16 on mine and they rub quite a bit with standard ride height. nothing you cant live with though, but i am a bit rough. But they do screw the gearing up a bit too much really, next time round I will go to something a bit smaller.

Thanks for the comments, any ideas on what a good compramise size is then?

As i dont really need to get carried away, as its only a hunting truck, not hard out 4WDing. Just want tyres will get me more places that the stock roadies.

Have a read through the cheap vitara lift and then pop on some 30" mud terrain tyres. sumitomos went well on my zuk and rangie.

Special Price on the these tyres at the moment. $185 fitted

Will see how the clearance gos, if I do have any issues i will lift the susp by an inch or two

Hopefully these get me most places without too much drama. They seem to have some pretty good reviews.

Yeah i thought so eh They are on special nationwide i believe, Not sure what other sizes are availble....

The tyres are on the truck, and appear to have heaps of clearance everywhere. Am going for a play in the mud this morning, so will see how they go.

I think a bunch of sizes are cheap. 33's on 4wdbits are 220 each and I was quoted 230 fitted here in hamilton. Does sound like limited numbers though.
