looking for info on ZJs

Post by coop »

Gday thinking about getting into a ZJ, just need a bit of advice from anyone who might know...
Most of our examples are imports, do these have the quadra drive transfer case? Are these a fluid coupling?
And I believe they have the D35 like the XJ, do they share the same tight LSD as well?
Are the front CVs any more fragile than the XJs UJs?
And does the Wrangler D44 bolt in, or cross over at all?

Sorry for all the questions, but most appreciated if anyone can help. Cheers.

ZJs have a full time transfer case with either 4 High Or 4 low In In 4 High the drive is thru a viscous coupling which will crap out . In 4 Low the Tranfer case is locked (I think). The general concensus is that the ZJ transfer case is not as good or usefull as a XJ 242 case or a TJ 231 case.
The rear diff is a D35 is the same as a XJ except that the ZJ has disc brakes.
A TJ D44 would I think be quite a job to fit and also they are quite rare and only have drum brakes.
A better ZJ rear diff replacement would be a Ford 8.8 out of a Explorer 95 to about 99. It is the only part of an Exploder that is any good
The ZJ D30 front axle CVs are weaker than XJ U Joints however for regular road driving the CVs will last longer as they are more water proof than U Joints

At the end of the day a XJ is a much better mild to serious off roader than a ZJ.
A XJ has a better Trans (AW4) and a better Tranfer Case (242) and U joint front axles

Yeah cheers for the info, will probably have another XJ in the next couple of weeks. Had two previously which wouldn't die and went nearly everywhere. Unlike the ZJ these things are cheap enough to have a complete one with lapsed rego as spares too.
