nissan safari not reving

my friend has a 1991 4.2 diesel non turbo (wry60)

engine wont rev over 3500 revs WHY?
when driving it has heaps of power untill it hits 3500 revs then it will puff a bit of white smoke and starts to miss,

any help will be great,

I had this same problem. Came to the conclusion it was bad fuel or the wrong fuel as some idiot at the gas station may have put petrol in. I could never be sure. Mine blew heeeeaps of smoke and was generally shit but I was only topping up before a long trip so wasn't too bad. Went away once i ditched the fuel and filled up with diesel myself.
It was worst when engine braking at high speed down the bombays, looked like it was on fire
Had diesel and turbo do some checks on it and they reckon it was all good.

hi , three things come to mind all fuel. 1-a part blocked fuel line. 2-fuel filter full and needs a new one. 3-theres a micro filter on top of the fuel/injector pump where the fuel line come in from the filter, inside the bandjo fitting may be blocked.

this truck runs fine and no smoke until it reaches 3500 revs, i think he had the diesel bug last year and its never been right since then, he has had the whole system clean ect but maybe he didn't do that micro filter i will check with him soon

he said it was missing the micro filter on fuel pump and when he runs injector cleaner ect it seems to make it worse

Seems pressy hit the nail on the head and there was a micro filter on the injector pump it was deep down and hard to see but once he cleaned it his truck was back to normal, thanks for help
