The gear (worm gear) is on the output shaft of either the gear box if a 2wd or transfercase if a 4wd.
This worm gear looks like it is metal?? Anyone confirm (looking at pics on the net) If it is metal then failure is unlikely.
Before you pull box apart I would take out the speedo drive at box and check down the hole to see what the gear looks like.
And even make the gear turn. IE put in N and with handbrake off and one wheel in the air turn drive shaft. It will drive this gear.
Make sure the truck is chocked so as not to roll away on you.!

Or even try and move it around the shaft with a long screw driver.
If its slipping around then its stuffed.
If its defiantly that gear... You should be able to strip the box down from the rear in the truck. Looks like there is a casing behind the output flange that would come off easily.
There are heaps of manuals and blogs online, google is your friend.
The surf transfer-case is a RF1A....Or variant.

Have had my Prado apart from the rear, but thats a gear driven split transfercase. Similar....As its a Toyota :D but thats about all.

Have fun.
