CV grease nipple

Post by Heath »

Saw on a dvd a grease nipple in a stub axle that allowed grease to be pumped into a cv (just remove the outer hub cover I guess) and there was some sort of spring loaded valve on the hub(turny swivelly thingee  ) so the pressure didnt pop any seals. Looked like a good idea, but would be a bastard drilling a tiny hole all that way (specially if it was hardened)

Easy with a lathe and a bunch of long series cobolt drill bits.
Spin the CV in the chuck, and drill away. The drill won't wonder because the spinning shaft keeps the drill bit centred
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Well bugger me, as simple as that. I guess there will be piles of these turning up now. I wonder how it would affect the strength of the stub axle though. Not much I guess, but it would depend on the dia. of the hole.

The CV is not normally a problem. Once it is filled it doesn't need topping up that much. It is easy to remove the bung and still use a grease gun

The main problem is the top king pin bearing because it goes rusty.

I have put a grease nipple in the top in the middle of the 4 bolts to grease the bearing which also goes through to the CV and it works well.

Cheers Richard

Yeah thats how I have done it in the past too. This one seems a little complicated...
