Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
Hi All
Has anyone out there done a "in cab" free spool for a Warn style winch.
One that has to turn the handle?
Any idea's?
Would like to do one...Not much on Google, mostly air operated for in out style....

Telling the Navi to hurry up and get the winch hooked up seems to work

Haha
Yeah I've seen it.
Had a little motor to turn the handle when they flicked a switch. Don't know how it was controlled or anything. Was on a rig when i was out for a skid in pureora.

You can buy air actuators for relatively cheaply from norgen (if i remember correctly). You'll want a dual auction one that pulls and pushes.
All you'll have to do is make a lever up to replace the handle and have the piston pushing or pulling it from lock to free.

phone Ross Bolus (secretary of the BOP club) He'll save you.

Thought about a little motor, You would have to power one way for a few seconds and then reverse the current and power it the other way.
It has to turn 180 degs...
Prefer some way of moving it manually, as its out in front and will get in the weather..mud..sand...
Thought about gears and an old fashioned handbrake. The ones that you turn and pull....
Hmmmm

when I was looking through one of the 4x4 mags down at stinkys workshop last week I thought I saw a write up about one?

Thought about using marine shift cables?
http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/controls-and-cables/control-cables-and-accessories/tfxtreme-cables/
Try this for a start.
Have seen these cables used for all sorts of things, even a brake cable to the rear brakes on a landrover on a A frame.
There is a full range of anchors and ball end and trunion style ends. They are fully adjustable too
Best of luck.
Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
Soo you don't want to rely on anything electrical etc?? You could just use a single direction cable ie for pulling it into spool and a strong spring to pull it back into retrieve??
Re: Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
How about stealing the throttle assembly off a wreck? (Complete with cable). It already has a cable and spring return...
*edit: come to think about it, would only do 90° though...

I was thinking about two gears, small one on shaft to free spool.
bigger one next to it, then operate the bigger one.
Only need to move the bigger one smaller amount of travel to get the smaller one to turn more.
Make sense?? As current lever has to operate thru 180 degs.

Would worry that you might not be able to get enough torque on the free-spool shaft if you geared it...

Re: Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
Here's a different idea I just stumbled on...

...although it's probably not a workable idea for a front mount winch

Re: Free Spool in cab for Warn Winches??
That looks interesting. Thanks Jeremy.
Was thinking about mid mounting the winch to get the weight off the front end.
Also now my huge exhaust system has gone, I now have some room.
Plastic rope is on its way.....

What about a push pull cable, using part of a throttle butterfly? so that you can travel in a circular motion
