Right,
I think I have finally got to the bottom of a brake issue I have been having. After I have been around a corner, I found the brake pedal had heaps of play on the 1st pump, second pump it was sweet. On the straight, sweet. Checked the bearings and they fine. Swapped master cylinder and still same problem Upon inspection of the calipers and comparing them with Jungle's, we have found that both calipers are missing the piece of steel that holds the pads against the disk. I think its also called an anti-chatter device (bit of thin spring steel).
By any chance does someone have a couple? Please, it sucks driving in straight lines only!
Cheers
Dan
Landcruiser 80 front brake pad bracket wanted (anti chatter)
Re: Landcruiser 80 front brake pad bracket wanted (anti chatter)
Sounds like you got something more going on than the missing anti squeal shims, they are there to stop micro vibrations when the pad hits the rotor which causes the squealing. They arent there to hold the pad against the disc.
The piston seals in the caliper are what set the clearance between the too.
Your caliper is prob partially seized an when your fat arsed 80
hits a corner there may be enough flex between the hub/disc an the swivel hub (where the caliper is mounted) to push the pad away from the disc, if its siezed the pads wont return until you pump the brakes.
It could even be a rear one causing it
Did you check the rear bearings?
Id start by looking at the calipers. If theyre alloy ones chances are they alloy under the seal has oxidised an pushed the seal out an is holding too much pressure on the piston.
Well thats my 2c
Hope it helps
Ps I think the front calipers are the same as LN130 surf front ones so you could get shims out of one of them

Yep, there was. It turned out the tab on the spacer shim that sits against the bearing inside one of the front hubs was broken and allowing the lock nut to spin. This meant the hub was moving around and pushing the pistons of the caliper in. First pump brought them back again. I checked the bearing at the start by yanking on the tyre and it was fine. Oh well. Thanks to Jungle for guiding me through the process and putting up with my annoying questions for the last 2 weeks!
