Fitting Driving lights

Post by Sawdoc »

A couple of questions for you electrical guru's (have serched forums, no specific details found)
I am wanting to fit some driving lights to my 24 volt HZJ73 crusier. Is it as simple as putting 24v bulbs into a 12v set of lights,(as the sales people are telling me) or would i need to upgrade the relays etc? The truck has had fog lights on previuosly and the wiring is still in place, would in be ok to use the existing wiring or should i start from scratch. Any advise would be appreciated :)
Cheers Tony

Swap bulb's to 24v one's and if your using existing wiring it's done.

If your putting in new wiring, you'll need 24v relay instead of the supplied 12v one too.

Be aware the fog light's existing wiring may be switched to come on when your headlight's aren't working, if your after a driving light to add to your high beam and want them switched with high beam only, then you'll need new wiring...

Let us know how you want them to work and what sort of beams the driving light's are.
It's just more fun in a lada !!

thanks rotordogg, i think you are correct regards the fog lights being able to be used with out the head lights on so will need to put new wiring in.
I am looking at a set of Narva 175's with one being pencil beam & one being spread beam, to add some light to the high beams for night driving.

It's pretty easy to wire them up with a new realy, just take a feed off the high beam wire under the bonnet and use that to trigger your relay and take a 24v feed off your battery, through a fuse and into the relay.

If you want to make using the driving lights optional decide where you want your switch and then find a handy bolt close by the switch to use as an earth. Connect to switch and run a wire from other side of switch, through firewall and to the ground pin of the relay.

You won't be able to get away with running driving lights at WoF time if they're using fog light wiring, driving lights can only work when full beam is activated and must dip when full beam is dipped. Much easier to take the time to do it right now!
