I have an SJ413 which has a loud rattle which comes from the engine bay under hard acceleration. It completely disappears with normal driving.
Anyone had this problem or can have a guess at what it could be?

detonation, timing to far advanced, continue to listen to rattle will melt ya pistons and then the ali will rattle in exhaust, get ign timing checked

could be something really simple too, i'd pop the bonnet and rev the carb up and try to hear where its coming from....

Hi Frumpie,
Both those previous responses are spot on for what I would have checked. If you hear a "pinging" noise when the engine is under load, you need to have a look at your timing - using higher octane fuel also helps for this, but if your engine is designed to run on 91 then it has to be timing.
Other than that the only thing to do is look for mechanical vibration - i.e. loose bits in the engine bay.
Good luck
Hein

ahhh im not familiar with zukis but, it could be the valves? add some valvemaster and see if it goes away... I've got an old school high compression 202 in my landy and I chuck a valvemaster tube in there every other tank just to be safe.. and yeah probably a good idea to use 91 unless your timing has been specifically retarded to use 96/98 octane....
that "octane boost" shit they sell at teh warehouse has to be responsible for plenty of melted pistons, speshly in motorbikes

Re: Engine rattle under hard acceleration
I have a 93 Escudo with a similar problem, thinks mine is the motor/exhaust twisting over a bit with torque and rubbing on something, only happens when giving the loud pedal plenty and in a certain rev range.

Re: Engine rattle under hard acceleration
My Samurai was doing that too until I moved the timing adjustment about one centermeter, then it came right. And the same thing happened with my friend's Samurai, so its seems they are not timed right for our fuel. So get your friendly mechanic to check the timing.
Re: Engine rattle under hard acceleration
Have you found the problem? could be a buggered engine mount rubber, causing the mount to rub against the chassis? Had something similar when I did an engine swap in my courier ute. Just put a few large washers in there to give it some space to move, no issues since.
