mitsi jeep shocks

Ok im used to struts and coils, on normalish 4x4s, I knew my Jeep, had leaf springs so while I was crawling underneath just for the hell of it, I spotted small shocks , its got me curious how do they work , and how do you check them ?

lol that normaly would be bounce the car on each side and lord ive forgotten but you can tell by the bouncing, theres a small dust cap on the side of each one, I got excitted at the start I though they where ajustable ranchos, but no such luck, Ill have a look on the weekend and see whats underneath the caps..
