major shudder in 4wd under load?

Post by tuk »

got a 90 manual Daihatsu Rugger, 2.8dt with manual hubs.went to the local river / tracks and had been going good for a couple of hours,I got stuck and tried to nail it up out of a hole and was good untill it started to spin the front wheels then there is this massive shudder at the front somewhere. stoped and checked the 4wd and seemed to be working in low revs as would spin the front wheels i when took off but went to cross the river and could slightly hear the shudder again as more pressure went on the wheels.
only noticing the shuuder under load?
read somewhere it could be to do with watery diff oil which i checked and it was watery,
could this sound be caused by the diff oil or something more terminal like a axel or shaft?
everything appears intack under the rugger??
n e help appreciated

thanks

Sounds a bit like the water has taken out some bearings in the front diff. Could be input/pinion bearing :?:
Otherwise check all universal crosses for play. Turning these by hand may turn up where the problem is.

Cheers,
Simon.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Sounds like you could possibly do with some new axle seals man. Shame you didn't know this before! :P

If not a diff issue, check for stones jammed in the brake / wheel.
Had it once. Going slow was o.k but at a bit of speed it would start shuddering as the stone heated up and jammed / un jammed.

found the shudder, did the springs over difff which raised the truck alot, didnt extend the drive shaft as i tested and thought it still had lots holding inside. When i got the wheels off the ground on the wekend the shaft has poped out then started to slip. Goina cut the end of shaft that was slipping and sleeve the solid shaft so its longer, so in summary a straight foward fix and il be out this weekend to have another bash.

You could put a spacer and longer bolts on the drive flange?
