Canterbury Trip - Lake Sumner -Sun 16th January

Post by Wild Rover »

Hi We are intending to take a picnic trip in our Freelander 1, this Sunday (16th Jan), up to Lake Sumner (North Canterbury - Hurunui) and wondering if anyone else would like to join us. It's been a while since I was up there, the last time was in a Series 2 and then it was night and in winter. We don't intend this to be a hardcore trip and will bug out if the weather or likely track conditions would be unsuitable for softroaders.
If you would like to join us we intend meeting up at the Northwood Shopping Centre Smiths City carpark at 11am Sunday (16th). It would also help to email me at brian.walshmc@gmail.com so we know who to expect, what type of 4x4s to look out for & so I can keep you updated with changes in arrangements.
I will be bringing a snatch strap, light hand winch, 2x UHF CB radios, first aid kit and trip directions.

Gate after Loch Katrine is locked.
You used to be able to get the combination from DoC.
Now you need to talk kindly to the landowner and probably offer him something more than beer, $50 I think.

Search on here and I think you will find the info.

Thanks for the info - for my own part I'd be happy if we got as far as Loch Katrine. If the track beyond the Loch is anything like it used to be I doubt very much if my Freelander would even look at it.

Last time I was up there (quite a long while ago) there were 2 army unimogs stuck on the track beyond Katrine. Fortunately my friend had a bach with a boat up there so we took the tinny up to Sumner.

Our proposed trip is definately not hardcore but would be quite happy for any low rangers to join us - all tows welcome

Trip went well and thanks to ORE was joined by Nick in his Cruiser 3L Diesel. Will post a trip report once I find out where report drafts can be retrieved from when they are saved on the forum.

Did you only get as far as Loch Katrine or further?
