Head studs

Guys I've got some exhaust manifold head studs on a TD42 snapped off and the manifold is starting to leak. Had the warrant guys tell me its really a warrant issue so should consider doing them. While it was'nt leaking I was'nt "considering" doing them . Looks like I'll have to now. Whats the easiest/best way to get them out to replace them? Two are the very back ones so not easy to get at and they are snapped flush at best.

unbolt the manifold, then use either vice grips or weld a nut on and screw it out.

either way, if there broken flush with the manfold it will have to come off(thats if ya cant get a drill in there. )

If there flush with the head face, same dealbut with the motor up or out completely

Right-angle drill and Ezi-outs.

Then replace all your manifold studs with new ones fron Nissan.

Did a search and found this, I've got a snapped stud and it's the sod right at the back bottom AND it's inside the head by a few mm, my drill is too big to get in there, if I can't get hold of a right angle drill and easy out set does anyone know a mobile mechanic in the ChCh area who can sort it for me preferably tomorrow???

while you have the manifold off chuck a straight edge on it to check if its warped,if it is you will need to get it skimmed if you dont you might find you keep snaping studs off,just been through this drama myself.

crc is your best friend with broken studs.go down to trade tools or an engineering shop and try and get a rigid screw extractor set they are one of the best.they have drill centres etc included in the kit.failing that sharpen up a screw driver or get a small cold chisel and try and tap it around with a hammer.sometimes it works.tap out all the holes before replacing the studs.

Got a brand spankers new manifold going back on and not the original.

It's inside the head by a few mm mate...can't even weld anything onto it so won't be able to tap it with anything. Whats 'drill centres'? George Henry would have stuff like that I guess?

The drill centres are a little bit of round bar basically with a hole in the middle that the drill passes through and the outside fits tightly into the start of the hole to hold the drill centred

undo engine mounts jack the engine over, i had to buy angle drill attachment,
drill to tapping size only then retap a pain but can be done

Perhaps with a left hand drill bit also. Often simply drilling with a LH bit will pull the bolt/stud out as it bites.

but you got to get it in there, generaly the things are tight in there
