LSD Diff, New oil
LSD Diff, New oil
Im wanting to tighten up the lsd in my terrano, and was wondering if just putting new oil in will make much of a difference?
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
May need a service. How old is the current oil. Give it a go won't hurt. Whaen I had my terrano, I had the diff out and LSD tightened. F**K it was good after that.

Normal gear oil????
LSD will be stuffed in no time, its to thin to cope with the heat generated and won't protect the workings.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

You don't use oil to tighten them. If you take it to a diff shop, they'll be able to set it all up correctly pretty quick.

How much does that cost?
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
There are also oil additives for LSD units..Makes them work better as some diff oils may not be compatible for LSD units.

Yeah seen some of that at BNT, does it work good?
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
It works, after a fashion. But it's no substitute for having things set up correctly in the first place. Take it to a shop and get it done - you'll be happier!

i got an lsd and before i put it into my truck i pulled it apart clean everything with petrol and put a small washer in between the spring, the thicker the washer the more force it will take to slip, even a 2mm washer will make it work very effectively. and the biggest thing is good clean lsd oil and keep the water out. i learned to pull a diff apart by reading about it on the net so its not too hard just need a little knowledge (if you wanted to save a bit of coin)
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
Just give it an oil change and put a standard LSD diff oil into it. That will make a huge difference. Nissan LSD's are 10x better than the Toyota ones so don't get confused with what they have to do to make them work.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.

Re: LSD Diff, New oil
you need to run a good lsd oil like redline shockproof i use penrite lsd in my mu and have had no issues with it. if you dont run a lsd oil you will destroy the clutch surface in the diff and will be as good as a open one.
to make a lsd tighter it needs to be shimmed up by a person who knows what they doing as the correct tolerances and clearences need to be bang on otherwise your diff wont last.

Ok cheers guys. I have heard toyota Lsd's are a joke. Think ill just do an oil change, cant afford to get it shimmed up. Its still working pretty good anyway.
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
You don't need synthetic oil in a Nissan diff. I have synthetic in my engine and trans (trans costs about $400) and yet just put cheap and nasty LSD oil into rear diff.

Re: LSD Diff, New oil
Got snorkel hooked up today, so was gonna extend rear diff breather, looked at the oil and it was a dirt colour, think its got abit of water in it, and it hasnt been locking up as good lately, So its time for and oil change!
Re: LSD Diff, New oil
Have heard changing the LSD oil frequently is more important than quality of oil - also a bit of engine flush in the diff a week before you change it can clean the clutch plates, any water in the diff will also dramatically reduce its effectiveness as well. To tighten a Nissan LSD up all that is needed is one extra clutch plate each side - if you have it apart pays to check the thrust washers as well, have pulled a few Nissan LSD's to bits and these always seem to be stuffed.

LSD's don't lock up man, I wonder if that's where your getting confused????
