terrano auto problems

i was driving round past red rocks just got to the first couple of bachs on long beach when the auto would not change gear, i saw a puff of smoke turned off engine got out to see the last the of the auto oil pouring on to the beach :evil:

pics are of where the auto oil sprayed :!: is it possible for auto oil to spray out of dipstick? or could it be a split hose or pipe? when i pulled the dipstick it was clean no oil :? so i got a tow off the beach. if it is just a split hose or pipe do i just fix then fill up and go or something else?

Refil and try the vehicle again. I would suggest insufficent ayto cooling causing the oil to boil out. Sand is one of the hardest mediums to drive in.
Disconnect the auto cooler from the rad and fit the largest remote cooler you can in front of the rad

it has an after market remote cooler in front of rad that i put in and is not connected to the one in the rad

most likely has blown a hose/pipe some were,if aftermarket cooler has been fitted I check hose's from them first(they may have been chaffing for some time)
Clean up oil mess then fill with new fluid,start engine and check for leaks,you wont need to drive any were as lines are under pressure when ever engine is running,if there is a leak youll see it pretty quick.

check the seals in the auto tran as well, my mates one just dumped all its tran fluid recently front or rear seal I think....

How did you get on Jumper??
Would be interetsed to know just what had happened to it!!!!

I suspect after loosing all the fluid there will be internal damage of some form :cry:

Just so you know, when i killed the Autoin my old Terrano, it cost $2300 for a complete rebuild.

Their must be more second hand auto's around these days!!!!

I know you can get recon torque converters for $200
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

all the seals look fine. cooler and its hoses look fine. all the fluid that came out looks to be around the dipstick and hose area.

when i noticed the problem i stopped within seconds and and a lot of fluid was still pouring on to the beach so hopefully i had stopped before any damage due to running with no fluid.

$2300 :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: i ****ing hope not.
i will be sorting it on wednesday.

one quick trick bypass the cooler and run the oil through one hose in a loop out to the cooler hose loop back to the in pipe just to prove the auto.

Next hook up the cooler and see if it leaks, if you use the hoses individualy you can test these first then add the cooler back. You may need to add a oil temp for the auto now :P

Hope overheating is all the problem was good luck. and hope you are not a mechanic and thought of all this allready :shock:

Make sure you flush out all the old fluid as it will have a burnt smell to it and be as much use as water in the trans.

There may only be 3 lt in the pan but there will be about 4lt in the torque converter so it takes a while to get it all out.

Hopefully it was just hot and not stuffed. :lol:

i have not had the time today to try and fix it and the garage has an inch of water in it.
i tried repco and supercheap for an trans temp gauge, repco wanted $240 and supercheap dont have any.

any one know of another option :?:
whats the best way to flush the trans :?:

is there a difference between trans temp gauges and oil temp gauges :?:

They are both temp guages the trick is knowing the temp range in the auto to get the right one and finding somewhere to mount the temp sender unit (if you don't have one in the auto you can patch into).

If you only have enough room for 1 guage, try this, get a VDO or anouther brand and use 2 senders ,one in the auto, one in the engine, and wire a double poll,double thro switch in to the wireing system. Dont forget to mark the switch accordingly.

i pulled the cooler off and dark fluid dripped out, then i put the hoses into a bucket and turned engine on, it then pumped out dark fliud so not blockage in that pipe or hose and it filled half a bucket which meant the auto had not run dry.
Next pulled the drain plug, dry. Filled back up with fluid hooked up the in hose to the cooler turned engine on and fluid pumped out fast, cooler not blocked. Hooked cooler out hose back up and all feels fine no new noises from the auto then went to aotea block with no problems :P apart from getting stuck :twisted:, blowing the diff lock fuse,two spot light fuses and the central locking :roll:

where in welly is a good place for gauges? i want an electric oil temp gauge.

Had a drive round red rocks today got to the start of windy bay when i started to turn round and caught a whiff of trans fluid stopped popped the hood and the auto breather had let a small amount of fluid out and the dipstick had been pushed up by the fluid coming out :cry:
so i need another cooler, could i use my old air con condenser as a fluid cooler :?:

I wouldn't have thought that would be a good idea. :?

You might wanna give the tranny a good flush and change the filter if there's that much crap in the system that its blocked up the aftermarket cooler!!!!!! :shock: :shock:

Cheap option then could be to fit an electric fan in front of the cooler???

With your temp gauge and a switch for the fan you could keep on top of it. Bet you'l be watchin the gauge like a hawk once its installed.

Only plays up with the drag of the sand i take it??

dark fluid? or just normal auto fluid. I've done a few auto rebuilds in my time. Dark/smelly fluid would concern me a little, It would say to me firstly that it had been badly overheated and/or secondly that there was clutch friction material or worse in it :( .
Did you change the filter in the end ?
You were driving in low range on the sand I assume ?

Hope it comes right :)
