Which club to join.

Hi everyone,

I'm lookin to get into some 4wd this year, and want to actually learn something so am wanting to join one of the Auckland clubs, and was wanting some advice. I live out in Beachlands so I guess auckland or manukau are the go. But looking to joining one as a beginner.

Truck, will be a daily driver, for me to get to work (Haven't brought it yet) so a shiney at a guess, with some decent tyres is what I'm budgeting on. Has to have room for the wife and kids - but you get the picture. Only 4wd experience was a landrover course in the Army bout 15 years ago!

So if I join a particular club, I guessing thats the best way to get in some trips ans start learning?
I don't see my self getting into a dedicated vehicle.
And is it kosher to join other clubs trips? I'm guessing theres always a fee to do so.

One last question, what commitments does club membership bring? have to attend x many meetings, be available for this or that? Once we decide on a club I'll be able to ask more in detail.

Yes a club is a great way to learn how to drive off road etc and you get to meet heaps of friendly people too. Most clubs cater to shineys as well so you will be sweet as.

Finally some clubs do have minimum attendance etc. I cant say what other clubs are but Norwest has nothing like that in place. SO it depends on which club you join.

My advice... go try them out. Most clubs are more than happy for visitors to tag along on their trips. So go on a few trips, go to their monthly meeting and work out what club will suit you best.

Of-course you'll need a 4wd to go on a trip, but the monthly meetings can be a good place to get some advice and pick the brains of some more experienced 4wders.

Having said that, either of your two choices would be a good one. I'm a little biased (Auckland club member), but they're a good bunch in the Manukau club too.

Sorry, should've given a bit of info about the Auckland club while I'm here...

Many of our club members use their daily driver as their play truck as well. There's no requirement to attend meetings or any number of trips. The only real requirement is that you pay your fees every year :wink:

And most clubs are more than happy for visitors from other clubs to attend their trips.

I'm sure someone from the Manukau club will give some info on their club, but like I said above, the best way is to check out the clubs is in person.

Manukau is a great club as well with a wide range of members including lots of family's. we have regular trips especially for new members. its not compulsory, but most people seem to come along to a meeting first to get to know people. if you don't have a vehicle you can hitch a ride with someone else, there is always some one with spare seats. meetings are 1st Tuesday of the month ( IE next Tuesday) at 7.30 pm South Ak Car club, wellington park, 1R Great South Road Papakura. Just across the road from Counties Toyota. At the back of the park behind coast guard. Ask for Richard E or tony, or just start chatting to someone. Everyone is very friendly, (well almost everyone).

I found another pair of glasses, I am going to try wearing them BOTH at once when I am posting, that MAY stop me making stupid mistakes. Than again, It may NOT!!!

Its good to have mates to point these things out, isnt it?

Was the "new member" at Tuesdays Meeting at the Manukau Club

Plenty of people to talk to and show me about and regail previous trips, cheers lads.

Being a shift worker just need to organise my shifts to make some weekends free. Will also see if there are any spare seats until I get some new treads for the wagon.
