bearing puller

sorry for repeating myself(re my intro),not sure how the forum works as well as everyone reads intros,so

i have a 73 cruiser,1991 i hz man

At the mo i m trying to fix oil leaks,so changing front and rear axle pinion seals (as well gearbox and transfer case seals)
I got stuck trying to get front axle pinion bearing out to get to c
crush sleeve .
rear axle bearing came out easily,and crush sleeve came out without having to pull the bearing cup out.

but front axle is a bastard.my book calls for bearing puller.i went to a supercrap store as well as repco to see whats available.
they have some pullers but i dont think its what i need, coz shape of their feet wont fit the bearing.mcentee hire have same shit for hire.

so if anyone could give some advice on that or might have the puller to borrow or some experience with the job i'd be real happy to have a chat,thanks a lot in advance

Have a look at Diesel Boy's Wombat thread.
Plan C is the last resort, but very effective.
I have cut heaps of bearings and sleaves off shafts and never marked a shaft yet.

Are you changing the bearings in the diff?
To replace the pinion seal you don't have to get to the crush sleeve.
If we are talking the same language?
Photo's help.
Drop drive shaft. Remove big nut, pull off drive flange, remove seal, and put it all back together remembering where the nut was tightened to so the pre load / crush sleeve is still as before.

ye,thats what i thought,but my book sais do not reuse crush sleeve,once the nut is loosened u need to install new sleeve.
also found some confirmation of that on the web as well

That's exactly what I told him when he came over. To do the bearings and crush sleeve properly best to remove the diff head and do it on the bench. Bit hard to measure the pre-load torque value when the front axles are still connected.
I think some wires are crossed. When reading manuals, sometimes they neglect to say "to do this procedure, disassemble first (See page bla bla).

Most people read "View active topics" so have more than likely seen your post as it shows all the forum areas latest posts.

I have changed diff seals as I have stated.
As long as you put the old nut back in the same spot there should be no issue. They are normally staked so you cant get it too wrong.

IMHO Pulling the whole diff apart for just the seal seems overkill to me unless its leaking because the pinion bearing is stuffed.
I know about the issues with preload etc etc....
You could google "toyota diff pinion seal change"
