Exhaust Temp Sensor

Who can explain to me what an exhaust temp sensor does in a jeep? Cheers

Is it a factory fitted sensor or something aftermarket?

I will hazard a guess and if its a petrol powered jeep then it will most likely be for the catalytic converter.
It checks to see if its getting too hot (blocking up)
And feeds back the the engines ECU. And has a warning light on the dash.

More info would help like, year, model, engine type, photo etc etc

is it a temp sensor or an oxygen sensor?, there is 2 oxygen sensors, one close to exhaust manifold and one by catalytic converter

I replaced the front oxygen sensor on my '95 Jeep Cherokee and it made a very positive difference to performance.

Its fitted in a trials truck and motor is out of a 94 cherokee. There is an o2 sensor on the manifold and then this sensor just before the muffler half way down. the reason I ask is because we made a new exhaust for it and left this sensor out and it seems to run like shit when it gets hot and then cuts out and wont run until it has cooled down. Ipresume it is the sensor not being in there but just thought it would help if I knew what it actually did. Cheers

When you say left this sensor out... Is it still connected into the loom?
If not. Plug it in and tuck it up out of the way and see if you get your problems.

If it is a Cat temp probe the ecu may need to see it...
I have removed Cats in various Jap cars and left the probe in the loom and tie wrapped it under the floor pan.

yeah It is still connected i tried that and i dont think that is working....

Having a quick google search there might be 2 Oxy sensors.
If it looks like a long thin probe then its prob temp
If its a short fat looking probe it could be an Oxy probe.
Which will need to be in the exhaust stream to function correctly.

Its difinitly a long Probe. im going to throw it back in and see what happens i think. Thanks for your efforts though

You caught me off guard remember! We will have a proper drag if your engine will keep going for long enough!

This could be the crank shaft position sensor also, that behaviour is the same that happened with me - it would just suddenly stop and wouldn't start again until it cooled down. New sensor and we were away again.

That solves it dude must be that, just get the new one already!
