L300 4WD wheels/tyres ?

Post by jd4wd »

Hi, I bought a 1983 L300 4WD a while back and Im just finishing tidying a few things on it. Its the original SC model with the separate chassis (the very first Japanese 4WD vans I think). These only have the 1800cc engine and came out with 14" wheels with LT tyres. Mine has been fitted with 15" wheels and 30 x 9.50 tyres which are due for replacement. My question is - based on the small engine capacity am I better to go back to 14" wheels and say 27 x 8.50 tyres so the wheels are closer to the size the gearing was designed for or do 30" tyres give more advantages and offset the effect of making it higher geared. Cheers John

well what do you use it for? Only on road? off road? the 30's would be a lot better off road than any 27" tyre due to it giving you more diff clearance etc. If its only a on road driver then yes tyres closer to the original would be better. But how does it go with the bigger tyres on it now?
