Rough gear changes

Post by charliemac »

recently bought a suzuki escudo 1990 fuel injected. and cant seem to do smooth gear changes, it makes a sort of 'Clunk' noise when I put the clutch in and/or release it.

Could this be the gearbox oil being too low or too thick?

also when i turn it on when its cold it idles really low but when its warm its sweet.Does anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks to anybody who can help.

The clutch system on just about any manual car is quite simple. You depress the pedal which either pulls or pushes on a lever on the side of the gearbox depending on whether it's a cable or hydraulic clutch. The lever pushes against the thrust bearing which pushes on the "spring arms" of the pressure plate and basically pulls the pressure plate away from the clutch plate so that the flywheel is no longer turning the gearbox.

What I'm trying to say with this explanation is that everything in the clutch system is quite smooth, you definitely should not hear any clunks (But sometimes you will hear some squeaks)

Some problem with the clutch is probably causing your bad gear shifts.

The most common clutch related gear shift problem is when the clutch plate is coming apart and "drags" on the flywheel, so the engine doesn't stop turning the gearbox when you depress the clutch.

Sounds like you will have to get it checked if your not up to checking it all yourself.

Good Luck
