Off track ?, but I'm gona ask anyway

Ok given this is a 4wd forum, I've just joined and been reading a few posts and thought I would ask a transmission question about a standard engine/maintenance check. This question relates to a Ford Taurus GL. when cold trans level is all good but when hot there's no reading on the stick. I have put 2 Litres and still no show on stick. I've checked for leaks and so I'm searching on the net as well for advice and solutions. Any advice.

When you check the auto trans fluid it shoulod be with the engine running and the transmission in neutral. Is this your problem?

I know engine has to be running (at idle) and hot, but I never new you had to have it in neutral. It could be the problem why it's not showing on stick then huh? Thank you I will check that.
