warn winch

Post by mud_slinger »

so i picked up a nice 2nd hand warn winch and just in process of chucking it in.

i don't have a wiring diagram and i have 3 wires that go on 3 diff terminals labelled f1 f2 f3. what wire would go where? i am guessing that the 2 long wires the same length would go to batt but the 3 other ones the same length i have no clue.

also the solenoid box is pretty big and is not sealed. where is the best place to mount this and does it matter if they get wet?

and i have no hand controller so how hard is it to make a dash mounted switch to control it?

cheers

New from Tigerz11 NZ is a 3pc Wireless Remote kit.

It includes:

1 x 4 pin socket plug( with wiring diagram)
1 x plug in Wireless remote unit
1 x Cable hand controller

I can also do just a hand Cable controller and the a socket plug.

have a look at mine tomorrow, it's a warn Which i've wired up so no remote required (in cab switch) simple to set up
As for the solenoid box, again have a look tomorrow, I run new cables and mounted solenoids under the bonnet in engine bay, up nice and high, easy to get at and outta the water and crud.

so wired up winch but we think the solenoid pack is either wired up incorrect or poked. we bypassed solenoids and winch worked.

we went by wiring diagrams on the net but yea still not happening.

can anyone take a pic of their solenoid wiring? or either im thinking of ditching them completely with one of these

will this do the job and handle the current?

yeh should handle it but i do know the runva 12v comes with a 600amp solinoid.
If you use that solinoid then i'd also be running 50mm2 power cables to help keep the temps down

I have a XD9000i which has its solenoids on the winch.
Been under water / mud....
Still going strong after 7 years.....
But if you have ones that you can relocate..
Get them up into the engine bay....
Offer them a bit more protection...Wont hurt.

get a decent solenoid, a cheap one will not hold load
current, if it breaks in the bush you can not fix it

I'm picking nothing wrong with solenoids....this may help 8)

If it's a late model winch it will have a five pin plug hand controller (five wires green, black, white, brown, red.
If it's an earlier winch it will have 3 wires for hand controller green, black and white.
In both cases;
Green... winch in
Black.....winch out
White....12v

early hand controllers had 3 pin hand controllers, later 5 pin. The 5-pin is a double-fault grounding system or some such (I think) to aid in preventing the winch from burning itself up in the event of a short. The ti's may also use one of those pins for thermal data.

So simpliest way to get arond the problem is to cut the red and brown wires and join them together or just bridge them where the controller plugs in, then the wiring required for in cab controller is the same as the older 3 wire , pretty sure thats what i've done will double check tonight, give me a call on 0272074454 if you want:wink:

I just replaced my Warn solenoid pack with something much smaller, so if you need some solenoids let me know....

Superwinch 12V from Traxion, will probably be around the $280 mark. I ordered them through Rick @ 4wdacc. Glad I did, fits perfectly behind the front indicator :-)
