My old one (just sold over the weekend) was like that and I put new shocks in before they took it away and made some difference but the standard rear springs are quite soft. In regards to the shudder I had a similar thing in my bighorn as well and I re-greased the rear driveshaft and changed the rear diff oil and mine went away.

hope that helped

I to have a 96 2.8 D and would also be looking at rear U/V joints, possible problems with slippery diff. Find some body who will let you exchange shafts, this will tell quicky and cheeply if problem is in SHAFT OR U/V JOINTS.
