Me and my brother are both looking at buying old series landys around the 1965 to 75 era, i'm looking at buying a not going s11a and putting a nissan td27 engine in it, is this a good idea?? How much work is involved? what else do i need apart from tools and engine and the landy. are the td 27s good engines?
Cheers Vincent

Conversion to diesel engines, in particular Nissan and Mazda engines, was very popular during the 70's 80's and early 90's. A lot of work is involved generally requiring an adapter plate between gearbox and engine and new engine mounts welded in. Sometimes a Nissan 5-speed gearbox was also fitted but this then required an adapter to the Land Rover transfer case.
As with the holden engine conversions the radiator may have to be moved forward slightly and this was often done with cutting and modifying of the front cross member.
Not sure how you would get on with the TD27 engine as this is a later engine but given time and money anything is possible. But what ever you use it generally will not be a straight bolt in swap. You will need to modifity and engineer components to suit.
After doing engine you may find you will also have to change diff ratios to suit.
Forward Specs in Henderson used to do a lot of these so could be worth while giving them a ring for a chat. They may still have adapter plates available.
Re: land rover series engine conversion
Dunno about the conversion, anything is possible with a grinder and a welder
TD27's are an excellent motor, my dads one is up to 440,000 now and still goes pretty hard
for a diseasle anyway

Re: land rover series engine conversion
LD28's used to be a popular diesel conversion a few years back, I had a couple of mates with them but they were always breaking shit in the drive train, mostly axles and diffs, I dunno if that was just the standard landrover breaking stuff or the extra torque the LD28's were running through everything, I drove them a few times and they pulled much better than the standard landy motors and holdens, as above you'll have to make up an adaptor plate for your gearbox and new engine mounts to get it all to fit
Re: land rover series engine conversion
there was one on trademe a few months ago with a td27 in it. would be a choice conversion i reckon.

A guy I know has for sale a series 1 landy on a disco chassis ( coils all corners) with a nissan LD28 diesel all certified , series 2 landrover gearbox, power steering, there is a few small jobs to do for a warrant, ( nuts and bolts stuff nothing major) rego on hold at the moment, sitting on 16 inch white spokes with BFG Muddies still with atleast 80 % tread on them, I have contact details if interested, the guy has been left with it when his mate had to get back to UK urgently, I have viewed it , has a winch ( just needs power to it) and a spare one,hi lift jack from memory, few other bits and pieces. Asking for offers but wants to get it gone, cheers Greg
Yea, though I drive through the valley of death (and it's mudbogs), I shall fear no trail;for tho art modified is my rig, and thy lift kit and lockers they comfort me. Amen
