Kzn130 Diff problembs help?

Post by Willwhk »

Hi,

I'm new to this but have a few questions to ask.

I own a 1995 Toyota hilux surf. Kzn130

I have just changed both rear wheel bearings after a rumbling noise. Both bearings were buggered but still rumbling.. It appears to be coming from the diff.

If anybody has any ideas which way to go LSD? Or ? And where to get a second hand one?
How to tell if it's a good seccond hand one. Idea of price.

Cheers

Will

It could also be the transfer, as it was with mine..

Where abouts are you ?
To Boon or not to Boon.

I assume you have checked there is oil in the diff & the oil is also good (no water in it)

Automatic hubs but it is the rear diff that is noisy

Yes I have checked the diff oil, it is fine not milky or anything just a few small metal filings

pinion end universal, diff carrier or pinion bearings maybe, center driveshaft bearing if yours has the 2 piece driveshaft. Though i guess metal filings would most likely point to inside the diff. Another local on here, yup we are pretty limited for parts locally aye

if you want a replacement you need to know what ratio it is. Check your axle code on your firewall plate and let us know. If it ends with 5 it is an lsd currently. I'd guess its a 4.3 or 4.1 and probably lsd if its a 1kz or open if its a 2lt. I'd say expect to pay 250 for a second hand open diff and 350 for an lsd.

Trademe usually has heaps but first step is to find out what you need. You could also pull yours out, see whats wrong and get it fixed. Sometimes it's cheaper and you end up with a nice reconditioned diff instead of another second hand one thats done 300k's.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

driveshaft universals being shagged cause vibrations, noises, rattles and lead people to diff problems and gearbox problems.
The only way to check universals properly is to remove the driveshaft from vehicle, check for free movement, no binding, and no wear.
Until you check the driveshaft universals don't spend anymore money

yeh i thought they all essentially worked like a 'manual' hub (on or off), but they are on the inboard end and locked 'automatically' whenever the 4WD button is pressed

Ive never seen a KZN130 with manual hubs from the factory ...they all seem to have fixed hubs but the 4x4 is push button via a vaccumm that operates the ADD front diff.
