Superwinch Hubs issue
Superwinch Hubs issue
Has anyone had issues with stripping the small star screws that hold the hub on?
I have just tried to take them off my parts bighorn but 4 stripped and 3 of the 4 have either a drill bit snapped off in it or the star pieces I have snapped off in there as they are high tensile I dont think I can drill them out... correct? unless I need to get expencive drill bits.
Has anyone got any idea's on what I can do to get them out?
I cant seem to get anything to work but Im open for idea's.
I had a similar issue with AVM hubs on my safari and didnt bother taking them off when I sold my last one.

Sweet cheers for that. I will see if I can get hold of one tonight
Will that work when there is a flat surface from the star piece being snapped off in there?
Looks like a trtip to bunnings after work.

Re: Superwinch Hubs issue
Ull have to drill the bit out or if u cn get in ther with a grinder u could try grinding a line in the head with fine disk to fit a flat head bit of the impact driver in, hpe that makes sense, giv us a call if you need bro
Re: Superwinch Hubs issue
Well got a impact driver and gave it a go but no luck ended up drilling and went through 2 batteries and havent achieved much due to the snapped pieces being stuck in there.
So charging the drill again for tomorrow's attempt.
To be honst I made a mess of one of them and I dont think I will ever be able to use that hole to put a screw in again lol

sweet might give that a go on the easy one tomorrow.
I also got a Colbolt drill bit today as they said it was stronger than high tensile drill bits. it helped but as it didnt do much I have decided to take another tactick.
I have drilled through the side of the hub close to the head of the screw so that I end up drilling through the screw which will make the head come out and I can take the hub off (hopefully). I managed to get through one tonight but the drill went flat so its on the charge and I will get through that one and if that works I will attempt it on the other ones.

haha I reckon I spent $25 on the impact driver and $10 on a drill bit I reckon I could have got a cheap drill instead.
Sweet will catch up tomorrow at the summer show and after I go for a ride in that Suzuki of yours

Re: Superwinch Hubs issue
Hi Ray,
When you get it apart and go to reassemble it, use some good nickle anti-seize on the cap screws and the problem won't come back to haunt you
I have learned that anything i bolt together, i use my own brew of copper/nickle and synthetic gear oil blend to make pulling it apart many months later is an ease.
A minute in in time saves nine
Impact driver works well with a small torx drive bit, hammered in to the allen cap screw first.
Best of luck.
Now all you need is some replacement screws.
Cheers,

Hey Simon,
Cheers for that mate I will look at making something up for when they are put back together. I had Mike (Scruff123) come help take them off for me when he came down to get the alternator off the parts truck. He managed to get a crow bar in there and snapped 1 (on each side) and the rest just screwed out due to me drilling them out. They were missing a couple surclips and its caused the sub axle to strip. So they will be going ontp my one this weekend so will just go down to EDL and get some new screws that are not the star type I will just get normal ones.
Thanks
Ray
