assistance from auto sparkies

Post by muddyhilux »

hi all,i'm probly gonna get into trouble for this but need some help with the mrs LOWERED R32 SKYLINE

started getting a mean miss the other night and everything i read said coils, bit expensive even 2nd hand so opted to buy a wasted spark set up.pulled out original gear and put in the new.was supposed to be plug and play but no.car is only running on cyl 5&2 which is the centre coil pack of the 3 twin packs.played around with it but no luck, even brought a new igniter but still only runs on 5&2.ripped all that out and put original back in,still same problem as original.guy i brought wasted spark set up off has been helping and is happy to check his kit but he's away till next week.any body got any ideas on what the problem could be with car or how i could check this wasted spark set up??

Yea, expect 2 cop some shit....
Hoping its a gts4 for your sake....
Pull out sparkplugs and check them- 90% of problem with petrol vehicles (statistic made up just then  ) is sparkplugs.
Does it miss even at idle? If so you can swap coils around to isolate problem ones.
Try searching on sites like nissansilvia, d1nz, skylinesdownunder, you'll probably find better info on rb series problems than ORE.

yea they are shocking for shagging coil packs i hear people are putting rubber stops under the packs these days to reduce vibration and make them last longer

You need a multi meter and a scope to check the igniter. Its either ecu, igniter, or coil pack. Very unlikely to be multiple plug failure. What the igniter is seeing and doing will confirm the issue.

yeh i agree with matt, multiple plug failure is unlikely.was going to try swapping coils but problems intermittent and mostly under power.have also tried googling for last 3 days and looking at skyline sites and thats where people said spitfire's but theyre expensive so went with wasted spark setup as they seemed popular but not even they worked, like i say only 2&5 which is why i get guy to recheck kit.and yes as i understood it igniter is just like a switch so tryed a new 1 but no difference so yeh

Is it turboed? have you replaced the plugs? I remember one of my skylines would miss under load if the plug gaps were wrong/ plugs were old, think the measurement was 0.8 but its been a while

yeh i know rob.plan is to buy a front cut 2.5t manual end of this year once weve saved up but yeh.have just tried my luck and purchased new set of iridium plugs,$115 later dropped them in and car ran mint, best it ever has but only for 15km or so,now she's just as bad if not worse than before   .so were to next, pulled all plugs as soon as i got in the driveway.none were wet but #4 and 5 looked dampish.can anyone tell me how i could check this wasted spark setup rather than me having to wait till mon when the guy gets back.i know the middle coil works because it bit me big time but i dont wana go testing the thing and damage it so any help appreciated
