Advanced winch motor testing

Post by UBZ »

Having drama with my Comeup Winch
Has the same type of motor as Warn / Superwinch

I was powering on the winch rope , under no load , mate flicked the winch from in to out and everything stoppped.

Appears to have taken out the solienoid as well.

Have tried the standard test , motor unattached to winch.

+12v to A Terminal
-12v to body
+12v to either F1 or F2

Basically lead attached to A terminal trys to weld itself to the battery terminal.

Striped motor
Bushes , commutator and connections all clean and good
Brush armature is not shorting between + and - buses
Rotor windings are not shorting to the rotor shaft.
Rotor windings are commen to each other with resistance of less than 0.1ohm
Winding insulation looks good , no burnt spots

Stator winding is not shorting to casing.
Stator winding has a resistance of less than 0.01ohms
Stator magnets have good ground to casing with resistance of less than 0.1 ohm.

I'm at a loss about what further tests I can do . Looking at $600 + for a new motor so would like to be sure this motor is stuffed before going down that path.

Any ideas appreciated.

I think you are testing it wrong...Its shorting out.....
Have a look at this link (looks the same to me but the other way around)
http://www.wms1.com/cgi-bin/category.pl ... agenum=123

Also are all the terminals isolated from the body??
Have gotten the washers / spacers wrong myself when rebuilding.

Mate ! Owe ya a beer for that one , knew it had to be something simple .
Brain was telling me that the stator shouldn't be an open circuit .... but I was sure i was testing it right
Just whacked it back together , tested in the right way and working sweet.

Cheers again , much appreciated .

Off to check the solienoid pack.

I have a solenoid you can use to test the winch with if you want.

I have both TG Thompson and one of the old style Titan Solenoids.

Cheers
