Gearbox oil for cold shifting

Post by kow1 »

I have a Surf with, I believe, the R151 gearbox. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth and while cold is hard to get into 1st on the move, and a bit rough from 1st to 2nd. It’s fine when warm. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of the likes of Redline, Fuchs, Castrol Multitrax or similar oils which are said to be a bit of a help here?

what oil are you running in it?
I ran 80w/90 In mine for a while and it made it a dog to change gears
have since changed to 75w/90 and it's heaps better , still a little hard to get into 1st sometimes.

I found castroll vmx80 pritty good to use on older worn boxes.
Seemed to make cold shifting much easier have used it many times with noticable differences in many applications.
