96 HiLux DC 2.8D front axle seal/Birfield joint trouble

Post by danielmoore.co.nz »

After having my HiLux DC 2.8D in the workshop for the 4th time, spending thousands of dollars and one near miss later.

I am looking for some help to fix my misty.

I was returning home the other day when the front right wheel appeared to bind up and pulling the whole vehicle to the right (into on coming traffic) and making some horrible noises in the process.

So I decided to find out what the problem was myself and save some bucks along the way by pulling out the Birfield joint and axle myself. After cleaning everything up a visual inspection revealed nothing. All "appears" to be fine any ideas what this could be.

It appeared that the binding problem only happened when it got hot or at speed because i crawled home doing 20kph and it diffident bind.

Does anyone know where i can purchase some marlin crawler oil seals

If you've pulled it all the way down to the birfield, was there any play in the wheel bearings before you undid the retaining nut?
Check out your swivel bearings to by testing for any up and down play in the hub housing.
If there was no play anywhere, maybe you need to look at the brakes.

I've never had any issues with standard oil seals, I get mine at a seal place in Porirua here in Wellington.

did you pull over and check it and it came right after you stopped or did you just continue driving home like that?

probably a bit late now but it would have been worthwhile (without burning yourself) checking to see if anything was hot ie: was the brake rotor cooking and glowing red hot or was there a lot of heat coming from the hub or swivel housing?

if everything in the hub looks ok now that you have stripped it could have been something simple like something flicked up off the road and jammed in the rotor :?:

Seized piston in the cruiser made horrible squeeling noises, and with the added stone trapped between the rotor and the guard it made real horrible noises....
