Try throwing a bottle of injector flush through it, that should help a little bit, the only other thing I can think of to do is to block the EGR off

How much smoke? Hard to tell if its normal without knowing if it's excessive or just a little.

(i assume you mean TD27 engine?)
i would not conceder it normal. i very rarely see diesels blowing smoke these days out on the road.
it could be egr being stuck open. if it is then it would have less power.
more than likely its probably needs injectors to be reco'd.

My Terrano did same thing, same motor, had the injectors cleaned out & reconditioned by a diesel specialist , ran clean as a whistle after that.
