98 Surf Mud tyres and Rims

Hi all, I have currently 16x7 factory rims and tyres on my 98 Intercooled surf. I have heard various stories to whether you can fit 15x8 steel spoke wheels around the capliers on the front. I am having a 2inch suspension lift and want to fit some reasonably priced mud tyres and rims. Is it just easier to go for 16x8

15s wont fit over the calipers, 16s are your only option really
