Terrano missing at ~2000rpm

Post by Butters »

Hi guys, being a newbie to diesels I'm really hoping someone can shed some light on a problem that my truck is having.

It is shuddering a bit. At higher revs it's fine, and seems smooth and powerful enough at lower revs. I've checked the banjo filter and unless i somehow missed it, it's not there.

I don't have a lot of money so if anyone can suggest a cheap and easy way to figure this out I'd very much appreciate it :)

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Don't glow plugs effectively switch off once the engine temp is up and able to ignite the diesel? It still surges when it reaches it's normal operating temp.

Any fault codes?
ETi pumps give bit of problem from time to time.
Because the missing is only at moderate engine speed with good power both above and below the revs, i would suspect the pump or injectors or if you are lucky the egr valve is gummed up.
Best advice if you are not up to the task would be to take it to a fuel injection specialist. Not cheap, but less of a head ache.

best of luck,
Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Could be the delivery valves on the injector pump, had a very similar problem on my landcruiser, would shudder and fart around from 1800-2000rpm. Bigger the load the worse it was, also was worse depending on what gear.

could be a problem with auto trans. they cant skip and hop gears and gives the feel of engine fault. would be worth getting someone with knowlegde testdrive it before you start spending heaps of $$$

Pay a shop to diagnose it then jump on the forums to find the answer unless you have the time to work through everything it isn't.

Someone on here recommended Diesel Services in Penrose, might be worth having them look at it.

I own a '97 LWB 299k, mileage around town is around 8.1km/l (23mpg) probably time to have our injectors cleaned/tested.

Check the auto fluid - you've changed the other fluids but not mentioned the trans, most people do not change it often enough, if ever.

Have a gander at http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/index.php as the Mistral is a Terrano II also known as a Ford Maverick.

I had a diesel specialist chuck a diagnostics tool on it when i first bought it and it came up fine. I’ve been looking into removing the EGR thing but haven’t been able to find any walk through guides. I’m fairly competent with a spanner, just need to know what i’m doing before unscrewing anything haha.

That sounds quite similar to what I’m experiencing. How was that diagnosed, was it a relatively simple task to repair or a drop the engine out kind of job?

Thanks. The guys at Midas have quoted a trans flush for $280 saying the liquid was getting old. Might be work looking into.

Cheers for the link, and yeah the trans probably does need a birthday according to Midas.
I’m living in Dunedin if anyone can recommend a good place for a check up?

I talked to a good diesel mechanic up here and he took it for a spin, also shuddered worse/better depending on throttle position too, (kinda felt like it was bunny hopping) It looked easy enough to do, but i wasnt sure if there where hiding springs behind the part. Got the pro's to do it :)

Sweet it sounds like a relatively simple fix if that's the case. Cheers!
