So I was at the car fair this weekend trying to sell the Merc and the guy next to me was selling his RVR.
Just curious what these are like offroad. I know their not really a 4x4 and are more of a town SUV. Im presuming they are crap as no one uses them but why is that, have they got bad suspension, bad 4x4 system, whats the issue with them?
Thought I'd ask as I never seen one offroading but the top of the range Sport Gear Hyper or something has the running gear and engine from the VR-4 and is running 180-190kw standard. Thats pretty good power output from a standard car.

Re: Mits RVR Sports Gear
They're not that great tbh.
A friend of ours had one, and he 'claimed' that he got to the lighthouse at Pouto. But I'm not sure that happened
He also had a fair few engine problems, but he was using it as a postie vehicle, so it was getting a really good workout.
They could be good if you are going to come across a little bit of mud on a country road, but I'm not sure they'll be great for much else. - What did you really want to use one for?
Oh, and they're only AWD, so no low/high ratio

I was just curious why their not used offroad but as you pointed out they havent got Low range so thats a major problem.
I checked on line and there seems to be zero kits for offroading for these so that kind of explains their not used for offroading
I kinda thought they would be useless offroad but the power intrigued me
I see a few trucks like this one and the Mits Junior and wonder why their not used offroad, just after the bad points and why they cant be modded. I cant even find what suspension layout they use.

I think the Pajero jrs are used offroad sometimes. I'm fairly sure they have low/high range (but I could be wrong). They would make a pretty good little occasional 4wd for some weekend fun!

Does that go for the junior and the io?

Re: Mits RVR Sports Gear
I remember seeing a Mits Jr offroad, I think maybe on here, but everything for it was custom made. Theres very little off the shelve for these and in my opion you have to do some modifications to take trucks off road.
I've have come from a Suzuki backround so I like small and light trucks so I was looking at the Jr but put off by hardly any kits for them.
I been told the Jr has a monocoque chassis, not sure if this is right, but that means no easy body lift doesnt it?
Not sure about the IO but that has a nice 1.8 Turbo engine.

Re: Mits RVR Sports Gear
iO has solid rear axle, centre diff lock and high/low range. jsut like a full size pajero. only downfall is the engines need to be screaming to make any grunt and the underside is really low slung. much nicer option than a rav4 for your mum though. Not sure how the GDi gear lasts but yeah. GF's mate has one and I've done cambelt and shit on it. got some sweet a/t tyres put on it for her recently too. did sweet skids on the old ones.
rvrs are a shrunken mitsi chariot with vr4-esque driveline. I think the engines are detuned vr4. smaller turbo and stink ecu etc. can get them going real well but yah. only as good as a legacy offroad. more of a ski bunny mobile.

Re: Mits RVR Sports Gear
Its was just the VR-4 engine and running gear that got my attention so thought I would ask. Wiki says their detuned but their still pretty good, VR-4 says it has 210KW, RVR says it has 180KW.
So all in all pretty useless offroad as well as the IO and Rav 4. Looks like I should stick to my original choice of a 2.8 Diesel Pajero.
Was just looking at other smaller trucks that make decent power. Going from a Vitara to a SJ413 and now looking for a new truck. Like small trucks but wanted to get something abit more powerful to get away from the screaming 1.3
Theres a Mu on Trademe with a 4.9L 302ci Windsor Motor, nice engine and power but think it wld tear the truck apart offroad.
Just looked on google and found this about the IO, "he still cant put bigger rubber on the front - the bottom spring pan sits within an inch of the stock rubber as it is. Taller rubber would foul the spring pan" looks like thats a main reason their not used offroad alot.

Lol a friend of mine used to take his offroad, Sadly i cant seem to find anymore photos at the moment

Re: Mits RVR Sports Gear
the early turbo RVR's run the EVO1 engine and running gear. which is around the 180kw. the newer shape run the EVO4 motor and running gear which is the 206kw. A pajero IO with the EVO motor would go nicely...
