Trans Auto doesn't like OD in the cold

I thought it might have something to do with a 5 minutes of uphill driving i do from the second i leave my property so i’ve since taken it for a warmup around the block before tackling the hills – that did the trick but could have been pointing out a trans fault.

This is interesting and something mine does only when its cold. (It doesn't like going into Over Drive.) I was told by the local garage that the trans in the terranos does this until the temperature comes up. Some sort of safety mechanisim. Mine is a 1991 Terrano.
Anyone else know about this?

Hey fullthrottle,

Yup, this is a safety feature to allow the engine to warm up quicker (higher rpm's). If I remember correctly, there is a thread on here somewhere that give's instructions to over ride this buy cutting and looping a wire that goes to the converter lock-up in the tran's loom. The safari auto is the same i believe.

My D21 was the same, but i never bothered...

Cheers,

yup correct, if the proplem gets worse ie takes longer and longer to go into lockup look at the trans temp sensor in the radiator.

Mine was keeping me out of top gear the entire way to Mosgiel from Dunedin each morning (about 15 minutes of open road driving). Quite aggressive shifting too, very jerky.
I should add that mine was driving like it was stuck in a lower gear. I know all about the 'hold' switch too haha

Never really paid it another thought as the owners manual says this is normal when cold.
