Looking at Safaris, would anyone recommend the 2.8 TD over a 4.2 TD?

Half the engine with same power, suppose they use them onroad and 0ff in aussie
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered

Probably not so suited to heavy towing, but they go quite well. Not quite as robust an engine as td42. Alloy head has potential to crack, and head gaskets can go also. I've got a rd28 in a laurel that I've turbo'd, and although the engine is mega worn out (smokey, bubbly etc), still drives smooth and quiet

Right, based on that I'll stay with the 4.2.

dont touch them, speaking from personal experience. gutless underpowered pos.

Dog and Lemmon guide says they warp heads, and to stay away!

I had a turbo one my gu SWB, did around 80k over 6 years no problems, but there are a few story's on the net, basically like they said above, head gaskets are prone to go at just over 200k, if you don't pick it up say good buy to head then you are stuck trying to find a rear engine part.
But the 4.2 is less gutless (110kw or something
) and has a better rep.
My advise would be get the 2.8 much cheaper truck, thrash it and or rip it out and chuck a v8 in it problem solved.
