LJ70 Info required

Post by LJ70kid »

Hey Fella's. I'm all new to this site. Logged onto the boy's account.

Vehicles owned are a 74 FJ40 with a 350chev, 35's etc and a recently purchased 89 LJ70 for my son. Standard 2.4L TD

I don't know much about the LJ70's so any info is good information; tips to increase the 90-something horses she has under the hood, good upgrades etc etc.

Looking forward to your replies;

Cheers :)

Its running a 2.4 2LT, you can put a bigger exhaust and wind the fuel up a wee bit but they are known to crack heads, later ones have the 2LTE and 1KZTE which are better, truck will have 4.8 diffs

Thanks.

Do they go all right off road with the 2.4? It's a small engine but for the son, what do you think? He's not going to be doing anything very technical...

2.4 has enough grunt off road, well most of the time, once you are in low box you are fine.

I've had one for years. Had the old 2lt until last year. would power 33's just but tended to run out of horses when you really needed them. Repowered with 1kz. what a difference.Image

jj1959 - Your truck looks epic!

Are those LED's in the bull bar?

When you say the new motor - which one exactly would that be... the 1kz? (Is that the 3L TD)?

Also; how did your 2L go?

As mentioned above, I was considering putting a top mounted intercooler on it, cutting out the mufflers and turning the diesel up a little bit..thoughts?

Anyone else know anything about 4:8 diff's? Are they any good?

The spots are 12V 50w halogens from house down lights mounted in a bit of PVC tube. $3.50 each from Mitre 10.

I repowered with a 1kz with manual pump last year.
2LT motor really lacked a bit in power even with the boost wound up to 15psi and lots of extra fuel thrown at it. Also 2.5" exhaust with no mufflers

Diffs are 4.8 factory
