Can anyone help me out, Ive just put raised leafs in my fj40 it has come up about 70mm at the front and 10mm at the back, either side is within 10mm of the other.
Just took it for a quick drive to make sure it drove ok and found that when I breaked heavily it dives to the left, it breaked straight when the old leafs were in it, any ideas?????????

never really come accross a drum brake cruiser that didnt pull left or right under heavy breaking
. Other than pulling your brakes down for a check and/or rebuild you might just want to have a quick look and make sure you've still got enough length in the brake hoses if the trucks come up 70mm?

Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
thanks ive had a look at the break hoses and they seem fine, ive talked to a couple of different people and theyve said it could be the wheel alignment since its come up so much so ill try that 1st. Im not sure what brand they are I just bought them off trademe, theyre quite heavy duty looking compared to the leafs that were in it.

Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
theres very little other than the toe in that you can adjust on a solid axle and that wouldnt have changed with the new springs, caster and camber are fixed and cant be adjusted other than caster wedges under the spring perches and its unlikely the caster would have changed much if any as the spring perch sits at the bottom of the curve in the leaf spring so lifting it and keeping the axle in the same place (horizontaly) shouldnt really change the plane it sits on and the caster angle.
pulling left or right is common on any drum brake cruiser I've ever known and maybe your saggy old springs were masking the problem a bit, best advice I could offer is to not waste your money on alignments and trying to sort out drum brakes... spend it on a set of front disc brakes off another cruiser or hilux

just trying to avoid the whole certification bit at the moment because Id like to repower it and do another couple things in the future but want to try keep it on the road for as long as possible without needing cert at the mo

Don't think you would need cert for disk brakes. My last two 82 fortys have had factory disk brakes in the front end. The aussie assembled ones had them
Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional

Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
yep x2 on them coming out with a factory front disc option not that I think any NZ new ones came with them, despite that not that I'm suggesting anything dodgy but its a straight bolt up swap theres no modifying anything and FJ40's are so old now nobody would really know if they came out with front disc brakes or not
Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
if i was to put disks in what bolts straight in? would it need to be an axle from a 40 that was original disks or do others bolt up?

Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
you need the swivel housings (coz they have the mounts for the calipers), a set of callipers and some hubs and rotors off a 60/70 series cruiser or you can use hilux stuff, you should have the later master cylinder being an 82 cruiser so it'll have enough fluid displacement for the callipers and you'll just have to check and remove the residual pressure valve out of the M/C if theres one in there. The whole lot bolts up

Re: raised springs in 82 fj40 cruiser
got it sorted today
, mate fuked round with the allignment and cleaned the brakes up seems good again, I know another guy who had the same problem and his has disk brake front end. Got some front shockies too so now just gotta get some big arse shackles for the rear
