Intercooler options

Post by RJT »

I'm wondering if anybody has used a standard GTI-R Pulsar top mount intercooler on a Terrano before?
I know the popular choice is to use a Bighorn intercooler but they seem to be few and far between at the moment, but have found a GTI-R one I could get for cheap, just haven't heard of people using them on Terrano's.

Unless somebody in ORE world have a spare Bighorn intercooler I could buy off them?

Closest I have got is using a GTi steering wheel
Bighorn bonnet scoop, Mistral intercooler
Far less shagging around.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

One major criteria need.....a 2 inch body lift to make the squeeze easier
I have said my bit above.
I'm not a fan of bends in boost pipes as they can be resistance not to mention lag.

I've got one of those... Though it is still sitting on the back seat waiting to go in :?

Definately a nice install that! Might look into the Mistral cooler. No doubt they're like rocking horse $hit.

Not that rare. Took a day of searching to find. Not the cheapest cooler around, but when you factor in the cost of the extra components required it works out quite cheap :)
I won't go into how much you value your own time.
Worth doing a search around your way. Intercooled Mistrals are from 96 up (the ones with the round headlights).

No, those two pipes that are bolted to the Intake manifold and Turbo.

Also that pipe that runs from the crossover pipe, down to the injector pump for the boost compensator. When i put the intercooler on. Where do i attach it to? Because there is no pipe fitting on the intercooler itself. Do i make it longer and tee into where the waste gate actuator is, or drill and tap like you have done?

Made the pipes. Drill and tap somewhere easy to get to and that is where the boost compensator and aftermarket gauge are plumbed in.
Here's a pic showing the mock up.

Thanks,
You wouldn't happen to know what kind of pipes are on the Nissan Mistral?
Or is is a different manifold and turbo housing?

The two hoses that you see are the standard ones off the mistral. They do have different manifolds and the later model garret turbo. I did mine this way apart from my tubes , everything else is standard factory. Makes for easy replacements as I seem to need from time to time

Hey Simon, don't suppose you could tell me the dimensions of that Mistal intercooler core (excluding 'end caps')? Interested to see how it compares with my yet unfitted Bighorn cooler.
Cheers.

i'm interested in the logic behind these top mounts after reading that article and the importance in the execution.
if your trucks up to its balls in mud, the heat will rise,
energy always looks for the easiest path to dissipate so its likely going to head for your intercooler vent hole in the bonnet,
by the by it will heat the bejesus out of the intercooler unless you're underway and your truck isn't up to its balls which would then mean the heat will be pushed down and out by the air flowing in through the radiator and grill.
so possibly a heat shield below the core and some careful consideration to which way your cooling fan runs (and where it draws air from)will be needed to maximise the efficiency of your cooler.

I have a water to air and I will never go back it does depend on what u do and when you do it!! They all have there good and bad points!!!!! If you want to wind up yoour boost and fule and not want to melt a piston then intercooler is there way!!! If u drive at speed and put ur hand out there window then yes lots of air but when bush and only just moving but your speedo is cranking then no air flow a pwr intercooler there only way!!!!! Even when ur sick of those gay boy racers at there lights my intercooler is rady to go

pwr are nice but jeez the coin involved sucks,
Subaru water to air work well.
as for boyracers just leave them alone racing them won't dampen there appetite for stupidity hooking reverse and backing onto their bonnet will though

yeah I suppose but I like the true hot rodders approach building something from bits of other vehicles,
as for there efficiency ? probably hard to beat what you have?!
although i'd probably box it so you could fill it with dry ice and further chill your cooling water by running a coil of tube around it before it enters the unit
