Silverstones or Mickey Thompsons?

Post by Garrick »

Hi everyone, just a quick question. Ive been getting prices on a new set of tyres, im currently running Maxxis Trepador and looking to upgrade. Everybody i know is currently running Silverstones, but today while i was in the store the guy tried selling me a set of Mickey Thompson BAJA CLAW TTC. So ive come home and googled them and found some good reviews on them, they seem like a good solid tyre i just don't know if they are aggressive enough where as the Silverstones are tried and true. So what do you guys think, jump ship and go with the Mickey Thompsons or stick with the Silverstones??

I had some Baja Claws as my first set of mud tires. Good strong cases.
They were the older model (without the TTC). The only drawback was, not flash on sidlings. Awesome side biters. When they were nearly worn, the sidewalls still worked mint. Sold them on Tarde Me and found them some months later in CRAZYBUSTARD's shed in Taranaki

the new TTC Claws are much more improved on sidlings (Cowper uses them on his trials truck) and have a great road mannor compared to a silverstone/simex 8) i drove a customers V8 79 series with set fitted and the road noise wasnt too bad either!

I'm not to worried about road noise as running two set of tyres.
Are the BAJA CLAW TTC going give me that extra grip and traction to get that little bit further through the bog or up the hill for the extra money i'm going to have to spend if i go with the BAJA CLAW TTC?

Another concern i have is that i was going to use 33x10.50x15 sliverstones but the BAJA CLAW only come in 33x12.50x15.

all tyres perform differently in different conditions and on different trucks, silverstones are wide voids and big agressive blocks so they will dig there way further through bogs, if thats all your going to be doing there probably the tyre you want

A skinny tyre would go better on your truck they will grip better.

Would go silverstones if you are only going to be using them in mud and mickey thompsons if you want to leave on your truck all the time. Had some Mickey thompson claws on my truck when i brought it and have been impressed with how long they last (did about 80,000kms) and offered good road manners for a mud tyre and no punctures either. But in the mud they are only a little better than a mud terrain whereas a silverstone, simex or super swamper are a level up again.
