Some advice would be appreciated on a snorkel install/installer on my 94 diesel surf please. I have modified the truck slowly over the last year considerably and have just had my first small drink (oh yeah i was told to check depth first!!!) Obviously one to learn the hard way I'm thinking better late than never and this snorkel should have been higher up the list hmmm been told. Anyway I have done some research on appropriate fitments and decided to go with a safari brand and have had one Auckland quote for $950 fitted. Considering the bill I could have been up for, this is cheap yes yes I know lol but would still appreciate any advice or thoughts on it before putting it to my betrothed
wozers 950 . i think the ARB kit cost 540 ish last time i looked. I think with a bit of help from a friend you could install it your selves in an afternoon.

Thanks man, its just the "making a hole in the front fender" that gives me the shits haha....do you mean wozer from 4wdbits?
I think that was meant to say wowzers Have you considered getting one made out of exhaust tube? Looks way better than plastic I reckon, much stronger too.

I would consider anything really but have just started with the safari snorkel as it has good width (volume) and less kinks than the airflow. Also read that the airflow doesnt quite sit snuggly on the fender and pillar as well as the safari. How it looks doesnt really bother me but I will admit a stainless one would get me grinning. Main thing for me is that it does very well what it is designed to do at a reasonable price as below am getting a little to far into this to continue without one hahaha.
yeah, you could get the bends and joiners for around 200 or if you sweet talk the local exhaust shop they could probably make you a one piece unit for that price too.
I fitted a TJM one on my surf. Was cheaper than Arb, looks better to and is solid as f#*k My mate used a cheaper one of trademe that looks similar to Arb(ie goes under aerial) it's pretty good but a bit weak around the pillar mounts

Hey man do you have any pics please please havn't seen these? I have seen the arb copys your talking about dude, they dont look to be what I'm after but nice price though!
They are a lot shorter than arb etc, are a good shape and fit very well Easy to fit just needed to get a short extra piece of pipe to connect to airbox from inner guard piece

Very nice mate, I like. Where did you get it and did you back outta there or jump further in?

Personally i would go safari or 3inch pipe, the 1kz love to breath the more air you can feed them the better and the tjm airtek ones are small body compared to the arb safari ones, other option is airflow i know the hats are ugly but they have great airflow, but ild lean more towards pipe mate
Yeah I hit the bottom of that hole pretty, found out why the guys ahead of me had gone around it but it was the first hole of the day so had to have a go. Got towed out backwards Got the snorkel from Fully Equipped in Christchurch
I have the Airflow brand snorkels in stock for your truck And they are 3.5" snorkels not 3". They do have a gay rounded hat but can get the square 3.5" hats also. $420+gst, and can freight one to Auckland no worries.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.
Get the Arb snorkel but fit it yourself. When I had my one installed by a 4wd shop (not in auckland) it was a pretty crap job. The idiot so call follow the instruction decide to mount the plate to block off the factory intake from the inside of the air box . When I looked at it , I was like why didn't u mount the plate from the outside since the engine will want to suck the air inward and pull the plate in.
I decide to pay for the labour thinking a 4wd shop would be able to do a nice clean job and have some assurance from them. I say if u want something done properly do it ur self.
Thanks for all your help, there's a heap of options out there now for me to look at and yes as wainui is close I will check out Jono firstly grin grin on the way!!
Well I have had to put the snorkel on hold temporarily dammit as I smashed a front diff flange (mechanic tells me) out at Woodhill the other week. Unfortunate as I had just convinced my wife of its importance grrrr! Anyway before the diff went I was considering having the ratios changed as I am sick of the lack of power with 33" tyres on anyway (100kmph = 2100rpm that's crap). Also sux when towing as the converter doesn't lockup in top till you hit 85kmph so everything is gettin a bit hot. Now I have read extensively on this topic but I cant for the life of me explain why I didn't first ask for live opinions on here before I went out on a limb and buy second hand diffs which are being fitted today. The original ones are 4.1 ratio with the rear being a lsd and we are replacing them both with 4.8 with the rear again being lsd. I must say convincing my wife as to why I am replacing both diffs when I only broke one of them has been blardy tough not to mention trying to look gutted when I'm actually stoked lol. Get the truck back today. My surf is an auto 3litre diesel and this is a happening thing now but I am interested in anyone's thoughts here or let me know what you have done to yours please.
If you had 4.1 ratio diffs and 31" tyre from factory . You should only need 4.3 ratio diffs to correct the 10% change in tyre size going up to a 33" tyre.
Much easier to find and cheaper to get than 4.8 diffs ... considering that you will probably blow another front diff in the future.
Ahhhh oops too late 4.8's are going in now as in post. Should have asked here first I know so looks like they will be for sale in the future. Will post on how it go's. This one below has 4.8's and he rekons it goes well but I didnt get a reply on rpm's@100kmph which is what I really wanted to know.
Yeah I asked him as well and the original builder on here but neither replied I fitted 4.3s to a mates surf the same as ours with 33's and he says its better but not by much. So I have 4.5's sitting in my garage to fit in the next couple weeks I was close to going 4.8 You should have a good improvement in pick up and will help reduce load when towing. Just a bit higher revs at 100k's

Let me know what ya think
Hey man yea well this has been a major head masher for me and every time I woke up I was changing my mind between 4.5s and 4.8s open with locker or lsd!. Should have started another thread on this really I spose lol. Anyhow to update the 2x4.8 replacement diffs arrived at my mechanics but they weren't happy with the rear so pulled it apart and the center was mashed so wrecker offered to replace the center (great service from these dudes at wholesale 4x4 Kumeu blardy awesome) of which he only had opens which spurred me to decide to go with that and add a lockright to it which means these will be staying in as I will have run out of putea to go back lol. So at the moment I'm still trying to source a 4 pinion 30 spline lockright for it in a hurry.....yep tried Tim and xtreme wholesalers......will update you as it progresses mate.
Also if your after a stainless steel snorkel, I bought my 3" stainless snorkel from Trademe a year ago, but a quick search looks like the guy isn't making them any more. I think he was from Palmerston North. Not much help, but you could show someone to copy it or something.
Hey man thanks heaps for the info but I've already brought a locker from Tim on here. I do remember seeing those SS snorkels on trademe awhile ago but yes as you say he's disappeared on us.
If you buy an airflow make certain you get the correct model . They all look very similar and fill fit snug to guard etc but pipe wil be too small going to airbox and will be restricted , only fix is cut off plastic pipe and reweld larger pipe , a bitch of a job. Also customer service from the aussie distributor is non existent if you do have any questions, .
