1KZ Surf noise

Post by Steve_310 »

I have noticed a dry sounding whine from what I beleive is the alternater ( I hope ) , Can hear it very noticeably when in neutral revving it and when driving (auto) you can hear it untill it comes on boost then the turbo spool drowns it out. Have done the stick the long flat head on the alternater and put my ear on the handle and listen. it does sound a bit noisy just wondering if anyone else has had a simaler noise or has any ideas on what else to check

Thanks

With the engine turned off, remove the fan belt and spin the pulley to see if it makes any noise, and check to see if there is any movement in the bearings.

The belt idler bearing for air cond do start to whine when they get old....
You can pull them apart and put in a new bearing... Only a few bucks...

The best way to find where a noise is from is to cut 3 foot off your garden hose. Cup one end to your ear and wave the other end round under the bonnet until you find the source  this method is surprisingly accurate

Just dont let the neighbours see you. They may not talk to you again.
