what diffs are strongest?

Post by tuk »

Just looking to upgrade my diffs soon and wasnt too sure which way to go?

2 of my mates are running holden v6's and were on hilux diffs and drivshafts. Both are having troubles with cv's, diff heads, drive shafts breaking constantly. turns out that they are crap!. One of the mates has gone to cruiser diffs and seem to be holding but the other mates looking for patrol or safari.
Im in the process of the v6 install and want to start looking for diffs now as my daihatsu rugger diffs look very small in comparison.
has to be solid front and back - either leaf or coil type setup.

any thoughts welcomed.

you wont get much stronger than safari diffs but you can break their CV's and FWH's, 40, 60, 70 series 9" Cruiser diffs would be fine and you can stick longfield cromoly axles, CV's and hardened FWH gears or drive flanges into them and they'll take shitloads of punishment. 60 and 70 series driveshafts are thicker walled tube than the earlier 40 series driveshafts

Chrome moly from flange to flange, yukon lockers (all chrome moly and not made it china) and then it wont be the diffs that break

I have found that hilux diffs are fragile but parts are a dime a dozen. My biggest concern Would be the low front pinion. So if you beff up the axils and cv's the front ring/pinion could be a week link. But I'm no expert.

Haven't really run safari axils but they look the biz. Spare parts cost would be worth looking into. I did Have them on my gu but with only 110kw of power hardly tested them.

moral of the story. make your clutch the weakest link with an adjustable rod btween the clutch fork and the slave cylinder... 5 minutes and a 10 ml spanner and your driving again.

in the past 6 months iv seen
2 x rear hilux drive shafts look like the end of a xmas cracker
3 or 4 front cvs smashed
i front diff head sheard the main pinion thingy.
2 axels snapped
1 front and rear diff waiting to be inspected from his last outing, bak diff let go then we carried on untill the front diff let go then we followed the rope home.

make him the navi', he might appreciate the truck a bit more if he has to spend all day dragging a winch cable through waist deep mud holes.

as for the aforementioned logic... you maybe right, but a clutch plate is cheaper then 2 drive shafts3 odd cv's 2 axels 3, diffs and a partridge in a pear tree.

i reackon having a failsafe is the way to go, if you make everything so strong it cant break, other things with break. other more expensive things.

i had the option to go to chromoly shafts, they may not break very often, but then other things get broken like the front diff etc etc etc.

i personally went with safari, cant complain with 9.25 inches worth of diffhead.

and its nissan of corse.

or plan B: adjust your driving style, we all break shit from time to time but if you start stacking up piles of broken shit as listed above you probably need to drive smarter not harder Image

Adjust your driving style first an foremost  an tell your mate to do the same.
my vote would be 60 series diffs with long fields an detroits for a tough budget diff. Having the clutch as a weak link is a terrible idea. Least you can remove a broken cv an drive home

definitly driving style has a lot to do with it and i really noticed it when i went pasenger with him - brutal comes to mind. nothing drastic just hitting stuff hard, and if he dont make it, he hits it harder....
Dont get me wrong - we dont want to be fixing every wekend but we want trucks that can handle getting the wheels off the ground and hilux is definitly not suited to that.
check out icelandic 4wds on youtube and if we had the funds im sure thats what ours will look like.
But we have fun doing it so as the title states im after opinions on stronger diffs that will handle more because it aint fun watching your mate power through and you have to follow the rope....
Weve found the harder you hit it the more chance of making it...

nissan safari on a daihatsu chasis running a holden v6 auto / bighorn transfer sounds like the combo im going for.

cheers

driving style. commy v6 isnt that powerfull. one reason myself and others choose to go with the v6 is it has enough power but not so much it smashs everything. Besides budget ofcourse  18monthes and I have done one cv. dam front locker. tho my truck is set up to walk things. gotta wiegh it all up
8 inch diff clearance
9 1/2 diff needs bigger tyres for same diff clearance
bigger tyres need more power to spin
more power needs stronger components. its a snow balling effect. lots of research.Make a plan that works together. safari diffs be overkill and a big job.
I never broke a rugger drive component with the 2.8 diesel. your right there teeny and the v6 would eat them.
cruiser cv's most models are the same as lux and an 8 inch diff set up properly is strong enough.
break anything if you dont drive it with respect. and breaking a pinion is more likley drive shaft angle issues, maybe why hes screwing drive shafts too.
just my 2 cents

60/70 series diffs would be pretty good. Safari diffs would be good but if you do a bit of mud work then you'll be dragging them diffs all the time.
Also wind the steering lock nuts out. you lose a bit of steering lock but lessen the cv angle when turning

If you win lotto or have as much money as a lotto winner and dear to be different. I stumbled across these.

Atomic axils they look the biz and having a bolt in JK option is sweet but don't know how the winch challenge officials would react?

http://www.americanfourwheeler.com/Over ... mited.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsLL89im ... ure=relmfu

Anyway back to topic.

I brought some banded Cvs and shafts for my lux axils for $100 a pop. $300 replaced the Cv I broke and $200 gave me a short and long. Only pain the time to put them in, but practice makes perfect.

Don't know what safari bits cost.

those atomic axles look awesome, pretty darn pricy though :(

i imagine they will have thereown troubles though, just like anything.

keep an eye on trademe, i got a swb safari chassis with complete suspension, steering (from box down) front and rear axle for 1500.

there was a landcruiser chassis for 1200 a while ago in the same sort of setup.

ya just got to keep searching and something will come up.
